About Medicaid Answers
Medicaid Answers is a program of Medicaid Answers Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Westlake, Ohio (EIN 39-4138097).
Our mission
Our mission is to help families facing nursing home and long-term care costs understand how Medicaid works in their state, in plain English, so they can make informed decisions and keep what the law allows them to keep.
Most families first learn how long-term care is paid for in the worst week of their lives, when a parent or spouse suddenly needs a nursing home. Medicare does not pay for long-term nursing home care, and the Medicaid rules that do apply are different in every state. We want families to know the rules before they have to make decisions.
What we do
- Plain-English state guides for Florida, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Kansas: what each state’s long-term care program is called, the current income and asset rules, what the rules let a family keep, and how to apply.
- A free 30-minute case review for families in those states whose savings, home or other assets make Medicaid eligibility complicated: a conversation about your family’s situation and how your state’s rules apply to it.
- Pointers to official, free help: state Medicaid agencies, State Health Insurance Assistance Programs (SHIP), Area Agencies on Aging and long-term care ombudsmen.
What it costs
The case review is free, and so is everything on this website. Medicaid Answers does not charge families for the case review.
Who leads the case reviews
Our free case reviews are led by Dean, who heads Medicaid Answers Foundation. Dean also works with Medicaid Success, a private Medicaid planning firm. The free review stands on its own: families aren’t asked to sign up for or buy anything, and we don’t pass a family’s information to Medicaid Success unless the family asks us to connect them.
Medicaid Answers Foundation receives no payments from any planning firm. If a family decides after its review that it wants paid, hands-on help, it can choose any professional it likes, such as an elder law attorney or a Medicaid planner. That choice is always the family’s.
How we keep our information accurate
Figures in our guides come from official sources such as the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and each state’s Medicaid agency, and every figure links to its source. Each guide shows when it was last reviewed. Rules and dollar amounts change, usually every January and July, and we update the guides when they do. If you spot something out of date, please email us at team@medicaidanswers.org.
Important to know
- Medicaid Answers is not a government agency and is not affiliated with Medicaid, Medicare or any state or federal agency.
- Only your state’s Medicaid agency can decide eligibility, and applying for Medicaid is always free.
- The information on this site is educational. It is not legal, financial or medical advice, and every family’s situation is different.
